Mr Brain's Approach : Integration of Six Sigma Breakthrough Strategy to improve student's learning process

Six Sigma DMAIC 5-phases Process Improvement Methodology had been widely accepted worldwide and successfuly applied in many industries for more than 15 years. Being a fully certified Six Sigma Senior Master Blackbelt for more than 10 years, I had now integrated this powerful process improvement strategy into my students coaching process.
In my tuition coaching model, I treat each of my student as an unique product flowing through my coaching process and I had developed very specific 6-Sigma tools for each phase to measure their progress quantitatively , help identify gaps and make priortized corrective actions helping them to achieve excellence results.

Highlights of Customized 6-Sigma Tools for each phase of the student's learning process

It is all about Mind-building

  • The journey of learning Mathematics and Science is essentially a Mind-building process through core theory understanding & practical problems solving.
  • Upon understanding of the fundamental concepts, the students need repetitive drilling to stimulate physical brain development and mastering of relevant process thinking skills which are unqiue to each subject.
Transition from Industrial factories to the school study desks, I had applied the fundamental principles of 6 Sigma and important analysis tools to bring about systematic improvement of the studying process.
Define Phase:
The first critical step in the learning process is to set clear quantitative study goal and timeline. A typical example of my students goal is to improve the subject's overall grading in each of the school major assessment test by 10% based on the baselined performance score entitlement.
These goals will be the perfomance metric for the student/parents and myself to work on to ensure success of  the tuition/coaching projects.
Measure phase
A detail analysis of the causes that lead to poor result was typically done in the form of fishbone diagram or Cause & Effect matrix. These causes were not limited to the student's attitude towards the subject but include environmental factors, hibats, character, mindset , thinking skill etc.
I would have to rectify major issues such as lack of dedicated study time & place, habitual issues like PC/TV additive etc before progressing into next phase of addressing academic knowledge learning and process thinking skill building.
For student who cannot cope up with small group study due to specific personality or character issues, I would discuss with their parent and move them into 1-to-1 coaching session
Analyze phase
When the students enter into steady state knowledge building phase with me, I would attempt to cover the major core theory modules in the first half of the school year. Upon completion of each major theme, mixed topical assessment tests would be conducted to establish the Pareto chart to understand the student strength and weakness.
Corrective training would then be focus onto top 2 to 3 killer modules to drive for improvement. Typically in this phase, the student's academic knowledge enter into a steady building state and a time to inteoduce in depth example and extended scope material to stimulate learning interest & fun.
Improve phase
Improvement Action Log is one of my essential tool throughout the year where the causes for low performance was logged and corrective actions introduced.
Parents typically find the list very useful in providing them a tracking record of what had been done to the child study method and let them understand areas where they can participate to help the students. Common problems such as carelessness during school examination, lack of pre-exam self revision plan etc require early coaching/intervention.
I maintain at all time a consolidated database for these actions items which allowed me to identify best practices that are highly effective pertaining to specific subject. For example, introduce graph plotting software to allow students to explore and try different mathematical functions, which can help build up their visualization skill to handle all graph plotting type of questions.
Control phase
Typically into second half of the school year whereby the students are gearing towards final examination, I will introduce series of mock drilling tests to keep their memory volatile.I tracked my student's test performance scores and monitor them via a Control Chart to help identify out-of-control periods such as during mid year holiday or festive period whereby there are higher risk of slack and dip in scores.
Also, the control charts provide information pertaining to student maturity of examination skill. When the variation of test scores was large, I would put focus on coaching of exam tactics and help build their self confidence.
On-going refinement of this approach
For the last few years, by applying this approach on my students, I had seen very significant improvement not only in academic results but also changes in personal behaviour/attitude towards learning.

Customized Active Tutoring Road-Map for each of my students
Each teenager has different learning ability and problems, hence they need active planning of learning roadmap to actively work towards improvement.
I  and my core team tutors planned a roadmap for each of our students integrating best selection of text and assessment books. Checkout below some examples of learning path that we did for our students in 2012/2013:
               Sec 4 O Level Emaths
               Sec 3 N Level Emaths
Sec 4 O Level Pure Chemistry
Sec 4 Expree Combined Science Chemistry
Sec 4 Express Combined Science Physics
               Sec 1 & 2 Science

Active Communication with parents
Students spent most of their time in school and at home, thus parents play a very critical roles in guiding the students learn to master effective study skills and habits.
As tutors, we maintain very close communication with parents starting with pre-assignment interview and discussion to know the current status of their children. Monthly report including strength and weakness of students and modules covered were sent to parent via email on a monthly basis.
We believed that the tutoring strategy has to be adjusted dynamically according to each students study habits and ability. With the help of parents enforcing certain rules and guidances at home, our aim is to help students build up self study ability.

It is my commitment to continue improve the methodology base on the cumulating data that I am gathering from my current students. My greatest joy is to see my products (My students/My Disciples) perform well in school and at work and become a life long learner.
